Student Art Project
2006
I knew who I was from a young age. In my room, staring at the four walls and making the blinds waver up and down with my eyes. There was a shoe box with an abstract drawing that I would stare at occasionally to break the concentrations. I took a pencil and a blank paper from my backpack to draw the image. I was impressed. Going back to school the next day, again my eyes searching for a new distraction, began to draw the same image.  A classmate was my witness, so she asked to see my drawing. After scribbling over it, she asked to  throw away the drawing. I said yes.

To middle school --  6th grade in 2006 had many projects back to back. Honestly dreading to do a science project, considering the blankness of it all. English literature class had the more interesting projects, giving that I'm just repeating what the author wrote in my own words. There was a challenge sometimes, draw what you are reading. At the time I was reading the Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I loved imaginative books at that time, it was colorful - able to day dream in extended fantasy about the world and characters. The book I had had the occasional scene sketches between paragraphs. I drew the one with the boy leading the pact of imaginary characters, with accuracy. I was pleased.Â

I went to my English teacher to show the drawing,  she smiled brightly to say - 'that's a great job!' I had received an A for the drawing and essay that went along with it, so I told my mom. She was so genuinely impressed, considering she had helped with my drawing assignments years before.  I couldn't do it, I sad before, she said all you have to do is first sketch the lines out softly. After some time my mom exclaimed to the family that I had did a great job on a drawing, then proceed to describe in detail of the detail. What had mattered to me more than anything else was that  she was genuine about me, so I sought the same reaction from my dad. Well, I simply gave him the drawing to keep.
The Big Break
2012 - 2021
Between high school graduation to freshmen in college, I didn't know what to do with myself. The world was fresh to me. I was willing to venture out beyond the monotony of the  four walls. I had applied to undergraduate college in 2012  with only two interests in mind; that is philosophy and general knowledge of the world. Art was never a consideration as a career. I needed an education to obtain a steady career to afford my life desires - whatever that may become over time.

I studied many subjects from the classroom to self research. Stressing over projects and essays, the only class I truly appreciated was in digital media. The class was grouped into pairs to create a themed scene for a short video, using GIMP to create images or manipulate images like Adobe Photoshop. The project result was overly ambitious but an impressive one. The professor had went around the room intrigued by the ideas and results. My paired, yet made solo project, was a woman character running in place in a horror theme to break a window in a house. I had spent a total of 30 hours, through several Youtube tutorial videos, from  making  her body to animating her run. It was amateurishly unfinished;  similar in appearance to the PlayStation 1 Tomb Raider 1996 character. The professor looked over the project to great surprise; although overambitious, for a beginner he said  the bare bones was there to create future projects.

In between other work experiences and self education, I couldn't shake that I required more credentials through formal education. I had learn to code, to sew and to do all other things I thought would bring about quick opportunity. In 2019, I had applied for a graduate degree in business administration. Â Somewhere along the way I had hoped that the additional education would help me land a steady career for once. Of course, a pandemic had created a mass time of confusion and major setbacks. Â All that became of it is a push to begin my own brand.

Sheepheads Brand
2022 - Present
Nothing is ever singular or ever happening as a clear marker of a decision. I work through ideas in burst of energy and out of curiosity. It started with a blog; wanting to use my undergraduate skills in long essay and report to become a journalist. 'We Ramble Blog' was founded to explain why our society works this way and that way. One article was about why black Americans choose certain businesses to create; such as, beauty, clothing brands, and other materialist ideas. I had concluded it is the easiest, tangible and most affordable means to enter into business ownership.Â

The idea came to me in waves after writing that article. Why not create a clothing brand that's uniquely expressive; using graphics that allude to something tangible and meaningful? I had studied the graphic designs over other brands and decided to create graphics using existing images by learning Adobe Photoshop. It was going back to my college experience of just learning how todo something on a whim of inspiration. I wasn't totally satisfied with the results. Somewhere of research independent clothing brands that I saw some people draw their own graphic illustrations. What an idea! I said to myself, I forgot I do know how to draw!

Now 16 years later,  had created my first art brand in 2022, Sheepheadsstore. In excitement for a promising career, my wife had gifted me my first sketchbook, the Canson XL Mixed Media. Nothing happens straight away, of course, I had to relearn how to hold the pencil, the pen and then the brush. As time went on L.G. Shepherd was created as a pseudonym  for how I wanted to represent all of my interests at once. I am Lashun Grant, The Shepherd and I express myself as a  guide of knowledge in this life. My brand is about being a black sheep, an outcast and as a person  with eclectic interests and motivation.Â
